Are these too good to be true? One of the most advanced and high-tech methods is IPL (which stands for "intense pulsating light") and these handheld IPL machines claim that they permanently reduce your body hair by inhibiting the hair cycle and preventing regrowth.
IPL machine, the most affordable hair removal machine
IPL machine is not the cheapest option to get rid of hair - with it is the most affordable way considering that you buy an IPL machine once and can laser away hair 10 - 15 years ahead. You will probably not need to laser hair after the first 6 months considering that there will be no hair then laser if these IPL machines do what they promise.
IPL machines can be expensive, and the price is between 150€ - 700€, but if you compare what it costs to get the same treatment at clinics, you will probably have to pay 10 - 15 times more, so to consider owning an IPL machine at home is the most cost effective method.
What is an IPL machine?
IPL is a broad-spectrum light that is spread over the skin to help with permanent hair reduction. It directs light towards the melanin (the pigment that gives the skin / hair its color) in the hair follicle, which damages the root and helps to break the regrowth cycle. Do not expect immediate results, but with regular use it can help prevent unwanted hair from reaching the skin surface. Energy, frequency, skin and hair color are all crucial factors for the effectiveness of the treatment.
Most of the best IPL machines we have tested are suitable for body and face. They work by sliding or "stamping" the IPL machine over the skin and emitting pulses.
Sliding is comfortable for larger areas of the body when lasering away hair (eg your legs). Stamping (pressing on the area) is better for smaller areas where you need to be more precise.
What is the difference between IPL machine and laser hair removal machine?
Do not confuse IPL with laser hair removal. Laser treatments use a different light source and target a more concentrated area. The laser method is often more powerful. You can use IPL machine at home, but if you want a laser hair removal machine, you need to visit a cerified clinic.
Is IPL hair removal safe?
IPL is considered safe to use if the provided instructions are followed as recommended by the manufacturer. Sometimes some people may experience side effects such as redness. Contact a doctor if any irritation occurs.
How to use IPL machine
For an IPL hair removal machine to work effectively, it is best not to wax or epilate before your session. Shaving in advance is recommended as the light can direct hair directly into the hair follicle. If an IPL machine is used on longer hair, there is a risk of burning the skin.
Can an IPL machine damage the skin?
No, but the level of discomfort varies from person to person, but the feeling can feel quite stinging and hot. However, the process is quite fast, so the pain does not last long.
Most devices have a range of heat settings to make it more comfortable, especially in areas that are more sensitive. It is important to remember that a lower intensity is also less effective, so keeping it at this setting would require you to use IPL hair removal for a longer period of time.
Who can use an IPL hair removal machine?
IPL machines are not suitable for everyone, as they can only identify and direct hair pigments which are a contrasting shade to the skin.
Because red, white and gray hair have too little pigment, IPL is not as effective for people with these hair colors, regardless of their skin color. They also do not work on completely dark skin tones. Usually, those with pale to medium skin color and dark hair are the best candidates for IPL.
IPL machine is also usually not suitable for pregnant women, people with certain skin / hair conditions and those undergoing special treatments. It also does not work on tattoos or permanent makeup.
