Create a daily facial care routine

Whatever your skin type, a daily facial care routine can help you maintain your skin's overall health and improve specific problems such as acne, scarring and dark spots. A daily facial consists of four basic steps that you can do once in the morning and once before you sleep.

1. Cleaning

Choose a cleansing product that doesn't leave your skin tight after washing. Cleanse your face no more than twice a day, or just once if you have dry skin and don't wear make-up. Avoid washing to get that sparkling clean feeling as it means your skin's natural oils are gone.

2. Serum

A serum with vitamin C or growth factors or peptides is better in the morning, under sun protection. In the evening, retinol or retinoids work best.

3. Moisturiser

Even oily skin needs moisturiser, but use one that's light, gel-based and non-comedogenic, or that doesn't clog pores. Dry skin may benefit from more cream-based moisturisers. Most brands label their products as gel or cream on the packaging.

4. Sun protection:

Apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF 15 minutes before going outdoors in summer, as it takes a while for the sunscreen to activate. Darker skin tones actually need more sunscreen because hyperpigmentation is harder to correct.
Choose products that suit your skin type and sensitivity, and remember to read the labels. Some products, such as retinol or retinoids, should only be applied at night.
